The wars of religion in this Cevenol
land finally brought to an end 900 years of monastic history. The building
was taken by a Protestant family, the Galtiers of Montauran, who
transfomed it into a private residence ( ... and at times a military
encampment, since several catholic churches in the vicinity of Meyrueis
guard the "burning" memory of fires and destruction at the hands of the
"people of Ayres").
In 1630, Meyrueis was punished for its
excessively courteous hospitality to the Protestant troops of the Duke of
Rohan : the chateau was razed on the order of Cardinal Richlieu and by the
wishes of the Senechal of Anduze (who wanted to finally subdue Galtier),
the two towers were decapitated at an angle and the enclosure wall was
levelled.
